چکیده

2014 The SmA phase is obtained after cooling of a strongly deformed planar nematic CBOOA. This phase first appears in the middle of the liquid crystal cell where the molecules are parallel to the applied electric field. The orientation of the smectic layers in the boundary regions depends on the strength of the electric field, on the rate of cooling and on the strength of the surface anchoring. At higher electric fields matching to the boundary conditions is made with a system of confocal domains with ellipses degenerated into circles and hyperbolae degenerated into straight lines. Filling of space is mainly random rather than Appolonian and stops when confocal domains have some critical circular radius which depends on the strength of the surface coupling. The surface energies in the smectic and nematic phases are also calculated. J. Physique 42 (1981) 307-315 FÉVRIER 1981, 1

Light scattering from the free surface near a second order nematic to smectic a phase transition

2014 We have studied the spectrum of light scattered by surfaces waves thermally excited on the free surface of a nematic liquid crystal in a magnetic field near a second order nematic to smectic A phase transition. We have measured the surface tension and three viscosity coefficients. One of the viscosities diverges and its critical behaviour has been followed to within 3 mK of the transition....

Coexisting nematic and smectic-A phases in a twisted liquid-crystal cell.

Twisted homogeneously planar-aligned nematic liquid-crystal cells are cooled into the smectic- A phase. The expected defective structure does not form. Instead the cells still show good optical-guiding characteristics. Exploration of the cells using a half-leaky guided-mode arrangement reveals that the liquid-crystal phase separates into three or more regions. Adjacent to both the upper and low...

Continuous nematic anchoring transition due to surface-induced smectic order.

A continuous transition from tilted to homeotropic alignment at an interface is observed at a temperature T(a) for a nematic liquid crystal on cooling toward the nematic-smectic-A phase transition temperature. T(a) is found to depend on the treatment of the substrate. The behavior is examined theoretically in terms of a pair of competing easy axes (homeotropic and planar) and the tilt elasticit...

Persistence of Smectic-A Oily Streaks into the Nematic Phase by UV Irradiation of Reactive Mesogens

Thin smectic liquid crystal films with competing boundary conditions (planar and homeotropic at opposing surfaces) form well-known striated structures known as “oily streaks”, which are a series of hemicylindrical caps that run perpendicular to the easy axis of the planar substrate. The streaks vanish on heating into the nematic phase, where the film becomes uniform and exhibits hybrid alignmen...

Ultrasonic Absorption and Order of the Smectic-a-nematic Phase Transition

— Ultrasonic measurements in CBOOA near the smectic A-nematic transition show the occurrence of critical absorption and therefore support the second order nature of the transition. The order and the dynamical behaviour of smectic and on the dynamics of the processes. In the present A-nematic transition (SA-N) in liquid crystals is at communication we report some preliminary results the present ...
